June’s Book Club Pub Crawl Book: The War of Art

by Ronnie Nurss on June 14, 2012

For Book Club Pub Crawl in June, we’ll tackle the book The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield.

This book is about the enemy of creativity. Pressfield calles it Resistance, and The War of Art is the ultimate primer on how to overcome it. It’s a force so strong and so pervading…a force that keeps us from success.

Pressfield states that,

“Most of us have two lives.  The life we live, and the unlived life within us.  Between the two stands Resistance.”

Resistance is the force that stunts our growth–it’s the reason most people give up on their true dreams and it stops them from growing into the true and complete person we all are meant to be.  It happens to a lot of my friends who once had amazing dreams and plans to change their lives, community and the world. Resistance got them, and now most of them have settled for jobs they already hate.

Resistance is alot of things. Pressfield dedicates a large portion of the book to defining it. We’ll cover the first half in this first blog post.

  • Resistance is invisible. You can’t see it, smell it, hear or touch it. But it is always felt. It’s that negative, repelling force that keeps us away from doing the work we want to do.
  • Resistance is internal. It originates from inside–Pressfield states that it’s self-generated and self-perpetuated.
  • Resistance never sleeps.  24/7/365, you must battle Resistance. It will never end.
  • Resistance is fueled by Fear. Pressfield points out that Resistance is fed with power by our fear of it. If we can master that fear, we can master Resistance.

*One BIG final note about Resistance is a rule of thumb Pressfield gives the reader:

“The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

Stay tuned for our next blog post. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of The War of Art. No matter your career, age or goals, this book will become a life-changer for you. Don’t believe me? Then spend 5 minutes and skim the book’s amazing and heart-felt reviews on amazon.

So, in the interest of further procrastination (the kick off theme of the book), I am reading this book, rather than ticking off my todo list. :)
