ltym 2013 steph at micListen to Your Mother, a nationwide live reading that “gives motherhood a microphone,” is coming to Sacramento in May this year for its second annual performance.

Thirty-two cities this year, each with their own local production team, will showcase a diverse range of stories from local women and men, young and old, who will take to the stage to read their owns words about motherhood, whether it’s about being a mom, having a mom, having two moms, having a village of moms, etc.

The show is a fantastic experience for both the cast and the audience. With such a variety of stories and experiences, everyone walks away with a sense of validation and inspiration and “me too.”

The Sacramento directors are now seeking stories with a call for submissions for the May 2014 show. Submissions are open to anyone who can tell their personal story on the theme of motherhood in five minutes or less. People interested in submitting a story of their own can find the Listen to Your Mother Sacramento submission guidelines page here.

Stories will be selected for reading aloud at an audition and then the show will be cast from there. You don’t have to be a professional writer or performer. Many previous cast members of the show across the country had never spoken in public before they stood on the LTYM stage.

The submission deadline is February 23, 2014.

A portion of the LTYM Sacramento show’s proceeds will benefit WEAVE, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping those who have experienced domestic or other forms of violence.

The show is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, 2014, at the Guild Theater.

In addition to co-producing and directing Listen to Your Mother, Margaret Andrews is a member of ThinkHouse Collective, a blogger and an author. (Photos of Listen to Your Mother Sacramento 2013 by Sarah Maren Photography.)
